Distinguished from other enemies by their size and completely ridiculous hit point totals, bosses are most easily taken out with a bomb or shotgun blast - except for the Giant Head, who's entirely invincible. Defeating them wins you some useful items and treasure, so the average intrepid explorer will want to take them head-on rather than avoid them.
