Golden Idol
Golden Idols are a type of treasure present in all areas of the dungeon. They are always guarded by a trap that varies on where they are in the dungeon. Golden Idols appear as large golden skulls, similar to the game's icon. Unlike other treasures, you do not get the Idol's monetary value immediately - it must be picked up and carried to the level exit, or sold to a shopkeeper by dropping them at their feet. Golden Idols are one of the more obvious references to the Indiana Jones franchise.

Area 1
Edit

Added by IDrawTheLinesArea 1's Idols are placed on a stone altar underneath a gigantic stone carving. Grabbing the Idol results in a brief earthquake, followed by the carving's head exploding and releasing a giant boulder. Boulders may be escaped from by simply running away and descending the cave, or climbing to higher ground at least 2 tiles above the rolling surface (this can be done with the aid of a ladder or a Rope). If you're standing on top of a platform two tiles up from the rolling surface, note that you can fall on the boulder and get crushed if you don't jump over it as it approaches - and it's probably a good idea to sprint in the opposite direction for a while after you land, in case it rebounds off the edge of the level with enough momentum left to catch up.
Alternatively, you can skip the trap altogether by setting a Bomb off on the platform that it sits on. Make sure to demolish both tiles of the altar or the boulder drop may not be disabled. Destroying the altar will rocket the idol into a wall, ceiling, or even Spider web. You may then pick up the idol without fear of retribution, although idols trapped in spider webs above you may be complicated to retrieve.
Pushing a sliding block into the idol will cause it to rise to the surface without triggering the trap. It is safe to steal even if set back on the altar.
As a final note to those daring enough, it is also possible to hop over the boulder on level ground with the aid of Spring Shoes, and for the luckier ones, can be done without Spring Shoes, but be forewarned, as the timing is not particularly gracious, nor forgiving. A way to hop over the boulder without the Spring Shoes is to jump while its around 3 tiles away and while it carrys you before it crushes, jump again and hop over.
Area 2
Edit
Area 2's Idols are on stone platforms suspended over bodies of water, which will slowly collapse from the outside to the inside. Usually the ponds are harmless, with at worst a few piranha in them. However, some may require use of a Rope or Climbing gloves to get out of. The trap can also be easily escaped by sprinting to either side as soon as you pick up the idol - just make sure the path is clear before you do.
Restless Dead Level
Edit
The Restless Dead Level's idol is replaced with a Crystal Skull. These levels may be found somewhere inside Area 2 (that is, if you get one in your game). The Restless Dead level has a small catacomb somewhere in the map containing that level's Idol. This idol is different in that it appears to have nothing guarding it (save for a few undead skeletons) - but the second you pick it up, the Ghost will spawn.
It should be noted that, just like Area 1's golden idol, you could use a bomb where the Crystal Skull sits to pick it up without the fear of a Ghost - save for the 2:30 mark.
Area 3
Edit
Area 3's Idols are elevated on a thin ice bridge above a set of spikes. With the aid of a cape or a jetpack collecting these Idols is simply child's play. Otherwise, they may be difficult to reach, let alone retrieve safely. A Sticky Bomb or a well timed bomb thrown from a safe platform at the side can get it from the ice bridge, although it will send it flying. Alternatively, a Rope can often be used to reach the Idol.
Area 4
Edit
Area 4's Idols may be positioned in one of two ways. Normally, the Idol will be found in a small, nearly-enclosed chamber with a block ceiling that, when you pick up the Idol, will reveal a descending spiked roof and two-tile-high walls to block off the exits. Escaping this trap requires a Bomb or Mattock, as there is normally no way out except to destroy a wall once the trap is triggered - or by destroying one beforehand to prepare for your escape. It is also possible to place a pushable block at either entrance of the chamber, preventing the wall from closing, but this requires a conveniently placed block. Note that the underside of the block ceiling of this trap is ALWAYS considered 'spiked' in terms of causing damage: if you touch the underside while flying with a Jetpack or exploring with Climbing Gloves, it will kill you despite looking like a normal block.
During the "I can hear prayers to Kali!" level feeling, the Idol will always be found alongside a Damsel offered as a virgin sacrifice above a pit of danger, typically consisting of several arrow traps and a pool of lava. When you pick up the Idol, the floor beneath it will immediately collapse, dropping you into the pit and likely killing you without some way to stop your fall and make your way out of the pit, such as a Jetpack, Climbing gloves, or a Cape or Parachute and some Ropes or Bombs. The pit will not collapse when the Damsel is taken, so she must be taken first if you intend to retrieve both. Note that the walls of the 2-tile-wide pit containing the Damsel and Idol on top of the trap are three tiles high, meaning that it requires at least the Spring Shoes to climb back out with the Damsel (or just your life!) without using a Rope.
